Aspirin for Appraisals (or Paracetamol for Performance Reviews!) It’s amazing how many organisations suffer from headaches with their appraisals/reviews at this time of year.
Typical Symptoms
How many times do you hear “X tells me they’ve started their staff appraisals, but it’s been weeks now and I’ve seen nothing”, or “I asked for some training on my development plan but that was months ago and nothing has happened!” or even “how many people have we got who need Health and Safety training in the next 3 months?” |

It’s a hectic time for OPL this summer on the south coast, not because we are all paddling in the sea there, but because we now have a new client near Portsmouth, well known for its Spinnaker Tower (see picture)
Emergency Service
Barhale Trant Utilities (BTU) is a joint venture company working for Southern Water on emergency repair and maintenance operations. It’s a big task that keeps them hectically busy, so when their Operations Director, Sean Jordan, saw our software being demonstrated at the Academy day in March, he felt it was just what they needed. |

Back in 1999 Trevor Dawes wrote the first competency and skills framework for the rail industry, a framework that was taken up and used by thousands of rail industry employees in infrastructure maintenance contractors (IMCs) Amey, Balfour Beatty and Jarvis.
Effective Writing
This time Trevor has been working very closely with his old friend Jeremy Cadman of Bid Management http://www.bidmanagement.co.uk/ Jeremy has developed a practical approach to developing concise and compelling proposals, based on over 20 years of experience and practise which has given his clients a measurably higher success rate. As part of his portfolio, Jeremy has also developed a highly successful “Effective Writing Skills” programme, which includes a structured methodology supported by practical coaching and guidance. |

In March 2011 the Project Professional’s Academy was launched to a sell-out audience in London. Academy Director Paul Erricker explained to the assembled audience, who represented many influential companies in the sphere of project management, how he had helped the Association for Project Management (APM) to design and launch its new Registered Project Professional (RPP) accreditation.
Paul and Academy colleague Lara Taylorson were amongst the first to obtain the new RPP standard and have been busy training assessors for the APM during 2010 for the launch in spring 2011. After 18 months of work as project manager for the new standard, Paul is now released from his work with the APM, so it was time to begin to tell people what his plans for the Academy were all about. |

Atkins is a large engineering and design consultancy employing over 20,000 people both in the UK and overseas. We last worked with them 3 years ago to design a new behavioural competency framework around their key business values. Recently we were called in to design a technical skills framework for their Intelligent Transport Solutions (ITS) business, which is best known for its innovative use of signage and the motorway hard shoulder to improve traffic flows at peak hours on the M6, M42 and other motorways. |

We are pleased to have been asked to conduct a project to review and improve the behavioural competency framework used by Exeter University in its Performance and Development Review (PDR) process for around 1500 support staff.
The project starts with a survey to obtain feedback from key stakeholders. Based on their views we will then run a workshop to review and revise the competency framework, based on a series of carefully considered options and supported from our extensive experience of developing and upgrading frameworks. The finished results will be played back to the stakeholder group at the end of November. |
